Here's a short video showing the fantastic navigation features.Ĭatalyst also uses video data to analyze the edges of the track. Catalyst can tell me that I hit a higher top speed on the back straight, which means I came out of the previous turn better than before. I do like capturing that extra data, but if I'm being honest, I don't do anything constructive with G-forces or throttle or whatever. I should mention that I still use the Traqmate. Previously, I never saw any of my video until several hours later after I had downloaded everything at home. It's the perfect way to pass time between sessions. It's a nice big screen and the navigation features are brilliant.

No other device I've used has the ability to provide video playback with speed overlay the moment I get out of the car. The Catalyst does not capture G-forces or CANBUS or any of a number of other things, but it does do real-time overlay of speed. For this topic, I'd say the coaching feature of Catalyst is overrated, but the quick-review capability is massively underrated. There's been a lot said about it already that you can look up. I'll try not to go down the Catalyst rabbit hole too far. I'd like to propose another option: Garmin Catalyst. Then I render the whole video and upload it to youtube, which takes nearly as long as downloading it originally. Once I have all the data loaded on the computer (that's the really time consuming part), it takes 1-2 minutes to get 'em synced in RaceRender. Syncing is a nuisance, but with practice, you'll get pretty good at it. In the meantime, I believe 60 fps looks substantially better, and I'd stick with GoPro for that alone. Surely they'll offer an updated model sometime in the future. I was going to say the Smart圜am was a compelling choice, but I didn't realize it was 30 fps only. Other than that, any AiM device can give you what you want, and I especially like that the AiM Solo can be moved between cars easily and doesn't even need a power source (the old ones didn't, anyway.

I think it's a damn shame Traqmate went out of business - I've used AiM's analysis software and I don't like it anywhere near as much as TraqView. I use a Traqmate + GoPro + RaceRender and I've been happy with the setup.

This is usually a hot topic among HPDE drivers and I was hoping to get the scoop on the newest gizmos. If you were setting up a new system right now, what would you do? I have no experience with the AiM software so I cannot speak to that. I understand that it integrates with the data logger but the resolution capabilities seem to be about a decade off.

$1000 is kind of brutal for a camera that is only capable of 720p at 30 FPS.

The cons start with the price and specifications of the camera. The system is integrated, and requires only one additional cable to connect to the Smart圜am. The pros I see is that the data and video is automatically synced, without having to make adjustments to line it up correctly. You do not get the integrated, automatic synchronization like the setup below. I do not have enough experience to know if this is a difficult task or not. RaceRender seems to offer some cool options (custom gauges etc.) The cons of this setup I see is that the data is not automatically synced and you have to sync to separate inputs to get a "correct" video. The Solo 2 can capture the data necessary for me to analyze, produce overlays etc. The pros I see are that this setup is less expensive than the one listed below, and a GoPro can capture 4k at 60 FPS. The question becomes, what is your preferred setup and what do you like or not like about it? I am stuck between two options right now: I watched a lot of y'alls videos and it appears that most of you are using a GoPro and RaceRender to overlay your data. I am just starting the data logging journey and wanted to get some input. I have seen this topic discussed on various forums when performing my research, but I haven't seen a recent (from a technological standpoint) discussion of the preferred setup for track days.
